EUDR readiness: what Vietnam coffee exporters and EU buyers should prepare before December 2026

The regulation is no longer a distant policy discussion. It is becoming a procurement-data requirement.

EUDR readiness: what Vietnam coffee exporters and EU buyers should prepare before December 2026

The timing

The European Commission states that EUDR obligations will apply from 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators, with later timing for most micro and small operators. Coffee remains one of the covered commodities.

What changes in the sourcing conversation

European buyers need more than a commercial invoice and quality specification. Supplier selection increasingly includes plot-level or supply-chain information, evidence supporting deforestation-free status and the data needed for due-diligence statements. Vietnamese exporters should map who holds each piece of information before the buyer asks for it.

Do not build a compliance story around marketing claims

A label such as sustainable, traceable or responsible is not a substitute for the regulation's evidence requirements. Commercial teams should separate brand language from the documentation workflow and avoid promising compliance until the specific supply chain has been reviewed.
