Italy's 2026 food-packaging rules: a reminder to localize export packs market by market
European harmonization does not eliminate every national detail. Export packaging still needs destination-specific review.

The September 2026 update
Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade reported on Italy's Decree 143/2026, which uses flexibilities alongside the EU packaging framework and targets circularity, difficult-to-degrade plastics and single-use packaging. The specifics matter to companies placing packaged food and beverages on the Italian market.
The practical lesson
A pack approved for one export market should not automatically be assumed ready for every EU destination. Legal text, labelling, material declarations and extended-producer-responsibility obligations can interact in different ways.
Build a market-release checklist
Before printing, verify the final label copy, food-contact suitability, language, recycling marks where applicable, importer information and any destination-specific obligations. For small private-label runs, this review should happen before committing to large packaging MOQs.
